Handmade Stitch Bound Journal
This summer, at Echoes in Time, Kelly and I took a class together to learn how to make hand-stitched journals. I’m happy this journal will lie flat when open for easier drawing. Hunter was so excited to make one that we made another when we got home and we bought supplies to make more. I love that he is excited about making books. Here are the pictures of our class and at home. Yes, that is me in the first picture, no make-up or hair done, and the man with the bandana is Kelly.
Hopefully, the tutorial pictures speak for themselves.
You will need:
Sketch quality paper (think of folded size)
Embroidery floss or similar size cotton string
Heavy-duty needle
Rubber cement
Cotton tape (other name?)
Canvas or leather for cover
Large craft stick
Fine-tip pen
Scissors
Small tooth saw or serrated knife
Book jig or heavy books to hold paper tight

If you have trouble with my instructions, maybe this wonderful tutorial will have the answer. She made an extra beautiful book with fancy covers and exposed tape. So many options!
Enjoy!

What a great post – thanks for sharing! Your books are lovely and inspiring!
Thanks Reese.
Very cool! Will you show KodyGirl and I how to make one?
I would love to Gina. Kelly is going to make a bigger jig sometime too. I thought these would be great for a book of centuries using paper from a big sketch pad or 11 x 17. We can make some pocket sized ones…
How wonderful–what a great experience!
I love tea staining! I once scorched a white t-shirt while ironing a transfer onto it…so, I tea stained the whole shirt and now it looks all vintage and cool and no one is the wiser.
Er, unless they read this post.
Drat.
Thanks, I wanted it to look older and not show trail dirt as easily. =) It looks better in person than in the photo…but I do wonder if will look funny if it gets wet? On an Oregon nature walk it could get wet! lol I didn’t set it with anything. Just brewed strong tea and used a foam paint brush, rather impulsively.
I need my friend Gina to show me how to dye. Trade book lesson for dye lesson. hehe
Oh how fun!! I’ve got some leather and thread waiting for me to get a chance to make journals with the kiddos to
Such a great project.
Thank you so much for keeping my dad in your prayers ♥ His surgery went great and he’s already on the mend! I put a little update on my blog about how he’s doing
It seems like ages since I was able to stop by and visit with being on holiday for so long *grin*. Can’t wait to pop over again and catch up!
Hugs, rosina
Rosina, I thought of you when I planned this post, it’s been the works for a while now. Did you look at the other tutorial I linked? Those books are so beautiful, whereas our as functional for nature study and dirt.
I’m glad to hear his surgery went well, I’ll go over and read your update. There is plenty of time to catch up with blog friends during the rainy season, right. I’ve noticed the blog world is quiet lately. ~Cori
Wow! I love this!
