We are studying the states in order of statehood.  Each week we find the state on the map, read and discuss the books, and connect the stories to the area by using maps or Google Earth.  Each day we work in Explode the Code Book 2 and Singapore 2A.

The story of Morris and Buddy was a good one.  After reading Young Thomas Edison and They Called her Molly Pitcher, Hunter said he liked the story about Molly Pitcher best because of the Battle of Monmouth.  We both liked this story about the revolutionary war better than the books we read for Delaware week.  Seashells by the Seashore was not our style.  And the Good Brown Earth is a fun story and appeals to Chandler’s age too.

Our family picked the quilt fabric – dogs that reminded us of The Seeing Eye school.

This looks like a marvelous way to study the states! My ds10 was reading over my shoulder and asked why we don’t do this. I may have to borrow your study!

It’s so open to customizing for the various ages too. The books we are using as the spine also have information in the side bar that even I find interesting too. And the 4 line alphabet poem works for my youngest son. With my 8 yo I don’t read all of the side bars, just the ones that appeal to him. The go-along books fill in with plenty of interesting information. For an older child, you could do more chapter books. We are really enjoying the Creative Minds Biographies like the one we read about Milton Hershey.

I love the idea of linking the quilt square fabric to something visual to remind them about that state! very clever!! I may need a few sewing lessons so I can do this too!
