We are studying the states in order of statehood.  Each week we find the state on the map, read and discuss the books, and connect the stories to the area by using maps or Google Earth.  Each day we work in Explode the Code Book 2 and Singapore 2A.

Becoming Six chose this quilt fabric for Georgia peaches.

Here are the fabrics we chose for accent fabrics since most of the state fabrics have these colors.  I like the bright since they all fade with washing.

I absolutely love this idea and will be trying to do something similar with our Canadian provinces. I just need to put together a plan!
Have you chosen your quilt pattern? I looked back on your older posts, but just saw your hexagon link..will that be your pattern?
Thanks for sharing your great idea!!

The hardest part is deciding on the pattern. I think we will do a straight hexagon quilt using the 5 inch half hex ruler. Then for our state fabric choices, we will do some simply embroidery with the 2 letter state abbreviation. Or I can use fabric paint to stamp or stencil the letters on. I just need to test it. The quilt fabrics will be all jumbled up and not block by block, but I figure America is a mix anyway, with many things in other states too. So I think the 2 letter state abbr. will solve it. It will be an “I Spy” quilt. We would see the skiing for Utah or Colorado, and then try to find other skiers in the quilt, etc.

You could do a crazy quilt too. Or blocks. My problem was figuring out the size of the blocks for 50 states. 5 blocks by 10 blocks makes an odd shaped quilt for a bed. I could do 6 by 8 and then put two states in the end corners… But we like the hexagons. If you blog, I’d love to see what you come up with. :)

Alex, we will most likely do something like this one. We washed up the accent fabrics and plan to cut them in the 2.5 inch strips (I think it is) and then cut some half hexes like in the video in the 2nd link.

Here is the link to the ruler and they have a video tutorial too. They have 10 inch size too.

And for the record this idea came from my friend April at Becoming Six. She’s done quilt fabric swaps before and she suggested we add the books and homeschooling to it. We are doing this together, really. She is not posting about it yet. :)
